What are the Differences between Solenoid Valve and Pneumatic Valve?

Sep. 28, 2022

Solenoid valve product and pneumatic valve product are both industrial equipments, which are widely used in various applications and industries. But what are the differences between solenoid valve and pneumatic valve?

What is pneumatic valve?

The power of pneumatic valve is compressed air, which is often used to control the flow of medium such as steam, water, air, oil, mud, liquid metal, various corrosive media and radioactive media etc. Pneumatic valves require pneumatic control switches. The cylinders of pneumatic valves are divided into single-acting and double-acting. Double-acting pneumatic valves are double-acting cylinders plus valves. For double-acting cylinders, the left port is open for air intake, and the right port is closed for air intake.

What is solenoid valve?

The solenoid valve device is controlled by electromagnetism, and the lower valve body and the upper solenoid head with a spring inside is opened or closed by voltage control. It is normally closed by default, that is to say, when it is energized, the spring in the solenoid head compresses and opens the valve. After the power is turned off, the spring closes the valve by the pressure of the spring. So, it belongs to automatic basic component, and is often used to control fluid. But it is no limitation for hydraulic and pneumatic. In many industrial control applications, it can adjust the speed, flow, direction and other parameters of the medium. The solenoid valves type is various. And the types of common solenoid valves used in daily life include one-way valve, safety valve, direction control valve, speed regulating valve, etc.

The differences between pneumatic valve and solenoid valve

Pneumatic valve and solenoid valve component are the two most commonly used automatic control valves. Generally speaking, the signal source is the main difference between pneumatic valve and solenoid valve part. Solenoid valve can push the spool to change direction through the pilot gas controlled electricity, while pneumatic valve directly change direction by gas pushed the solenoid spool. Usually pneumatic valve need to work together with mechanical valve to be used in different applications. And the main application is the site with explosion-proof requirements.

1. The function

Solenoid valves generally can only be used as switches. In addition to the switch function, the pneumatic valve can also be used to adjust the flow, pressure and temperature of the medium.

2. Response time

The solenoid valve response time and pneumatic valve are fast. But the response time of solenoid valve is faster than that of pneumatic valve. The solenoid valve switching time is only 1 second or even a few milliseconds. For example, generally the fastest response time of solenoid valve can reach 0.5 milliseconds.

3. Switch form

Solenoid valve: it is controlled by an electromagnetic coil that is electrically magnetic, which is divided into normally open and normally closed.

Pneumatic valve: the cylinder is controlled by compressed air, and the power source is compressed air. Though both pneumatic valve and solenoid valve tool must use power source, pneumatic valve uses compressed air source.
